Though subconscious at the time of painting "Esperanza", the Expressionist Movement of Northern Europe influenced me greatly while this piece. Expressionism originated in the early 20th century. The artists set realism aside in order to better express their inner life, personal ideas, and emotions. The subject matter was often distorted and color often departed completely from reality.
In this painting, the trees are sentient beings evoking the emotions of waiting, striving and hope. Together they gather, a community reaching upwards to a higher consciousness, striving to live a life of service, no matter what their occupation may be.
