“Sittin’ on the dock of the bay, watching the tide roll away. Sittin’ on the dock of the bay, wasting time.” As it is so very well expressed by the Otis Redding song, I spent many hours on my parent's dock during the last years of their lives as I cared for them. Located on a hill at the mouth of the bayou, the view of the bay from their home was magnificent and the protected waterway below, a perfect place for a dock. The still waters reflected the sky beautifully. There were egrets and herons to admire, fish and crabs and occasionally even a dolphin would pass by! It was my refuge, a place just down the hill where I could relax.
“A Nocturne” is one of several paintings whose inspiration was the water’s surface as viewed from my parent’s dock. In music, a nocturne is a classical composition inspired by the night. As the sun set and the day came to a close, so too was I inspired by the beautiful reflections on the water as I was “Sittin' on the dock of the bay, wasting time."
